Wilkins (Merrillville, Ind.) who had a career night with 17 points behind 5-of-7 shooting from the three-point arc. Nick McGlynn (Stoughton, Wis.) gathered his 10th career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Norton (Bloomington, Ill.) chipped in 13 points and seven assists. “D.J. gave us a big burst in the second half and got us a cushion where we could play with a lead,” said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. The Bulldogs struggled early on offense, falling behind the Broncs, 10-5. However, a three from Wilkins sparked a 10-2 run to give Drake its first lead, 16-15, with 10:13 left to play in the opening half. Drake struggled from the field shooting just 35.5 percent (11-of-31) from the floor in the first twenty minutes. However, a late Norton lay-up gave Drake the halftime lead, 29-28.”I thought we shared it as well as we have all our and really moved it,” DeVries said. “Defensively we were stingy, but they [Rider] were mixing up man and zone [defenses] and getting us out of rhythm. In the second half, we responded and were unselfish in making the extra pass.”The Bulldogs came out firing in the second half where they jumped out to an 11-2 run forcing a Bronc timeout with 16:51 on the clock. Drake never surrendered its lead to move to 8-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Knapp Center. The Bulldogs shot 48.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded Rider 38-32 for the game. In the second half alone, the Bulldogs converted on 64 percent of their shots while holding Rider to 28.1 percent shooting in the period.”A big part of that [second half] was we were getting stops,” DeVries said. “Because we were getting stops we were able to get out in transition and drive and kick for some better rhythm shots. The stops dictated our tempo.”Rider was led by junior Tyere Marshall who scored 21 points as the Broncs move to 4-5 on the season. The Broncs’ 58 points were a season low.Drake will depart central Iowa for Las Vegas for the final two games of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.
