Biden’s popular-vote lead grows to 5 million as counting continues.

first_imgMr. Biden, who shattered his old boss Barack Obama’s 2008 record for the most votes received in a presidential election (Mr. Obama had 69.5 million), has now also drawn the support of a larger slice of the population than Mr. Obama did that year. Mr. Biden has won the votes of 23.4 percent of the American population, compared to the 22.8 percent Mr. Obama won in 2008, when there were 25 million fewer Americans.Millions of votes remain to be counted, possibly as many as five million. But whatever the final tally is, Mr. Biden, who already has earned 279 electoral votes — nine more than the 270-vote threshold — will remain the winner of the election. With vote-counting continuing in parts of the country, President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s popular-vote margin over President Trump is widening substantially. As of late Wednesday morning, Mr. Biden, with nearly 77.4 million votes, led Mr. Trump, who had 72.3 million, by 5.1 million votes and 3.4 percentage points. That’s up from his lead on Friday of 4 million votes and 2.8 percentage points. Revenue has now fallen four quarters in a row. The coronavirus pandemic and recession continued to challenge Cisco as much of its revenue still comes from sales of equipment for corporate and government data centers and offices, while spending on cloud services has increased as people work from home.Cisco saw a 5% increase in public sector orders year over year in the quarter, while orders were down in enterprise, commercial and service provider segments. Stimulus spending boosted government orders in the U.S. and abroad, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins told analysts on a conference call.“What I kind of was hopeful was going to happen which I think we did see this is that we had customers who were super focused on getting their employees working from home properly and getting their security set up,” Robbins said. “I think everyone raced to do that, and then I think they took a pause, which is what we felt in our last quarter in orders, and then I think they reprioritized what they were going to be spending money on, and I think we started seeing some of that come back.”- Advertisement –center_img – Advertisement – – Advertisement –last_img read more

Another UK patient might have caught vCJD from blood

first_img Health Secretary John Reid stated, “I would emphasise again that the exclusion criteria are being tightened because of a small but unquantifiable risk. People should continue to have a blood transfusion when it is really necessary. Any slight risk associated with receiving blood must be balanced against the significant risk of not receiving that blood when it is most needed.” The official statement provided no details about the patient who received the blood transfusion. When the first possible transfusion-linked case was reported, officials said the patient had received blood in 1996 from a donor who became ill with vCJD in 1999. The recipient had died of the disease shortly before the suspected case was announced. But officials said the recipient might have acquired vCJD in the usual way: by eating meat products from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. BSE spread through British cattle herds in the 1980s and 1990s. The department said it had expected to see further cases after the first case of possible transmission via donated blood was reported in the UK in December 2003. The second case is “of particular scientific interest” because the patient had a different genetic type from that of other vCJD patients so far, the announcement said. A detailed report of the case will be published in The Lancet. The UK Department of Health announced, “A patient in the UK received a blood transfusion in 1999 from a donor who later went on to develop vCJD. The patient died of causes unrelated to vCJD but a post mortem revealed the presence of the vCJD agent in the patient’s spleen.” This group was not excluded in April because the government wanted to assess the impact of the new restrictions on the blood supply, officials said. Now it appears that the impact is small, so the committee that oversees blood safety recommended adding the new restriction. Jul 22, 2004 (CIDRAP News) – A second possible case of transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) via blood transfusion has been reported in the United Kingdom, triggering new restrictions on who can give blood. See also: The UK uses several other precautions to protect the blood supply from vCJD infectivity, the Department of Health noted. Since 1997, new cases of vCJD have triggered a search for and destruction of any blood donated by the patient. Since 1998 the UK has used blood plasma from the United States to produce all plasma derivatives. And since October 1999, white blood cells, which may pose the greatest risk of transmitting vCJD, have been removed from blood used for transfusions. As a result of the first possible transfusion-related vCJD case, the UK in April stopped taking blood donations from anyone who had received a blood transfusion since January 1980. Starting Aug 2, the department said, donations will not be accepted from people who are unsure if they have had a transfusion since January 1980. This includes apheresis donors—those who frequently give blood and have it retransfused after the removal of certain components. UK forms partnership to hunt for vCJD treatment

first_img MRC news release About 150 people in the UK have died of vCJD, the human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. There is no cure for the fatal brain-wasting disease, which people can contract by eating meat products from BSE-infected cattle. BSE spread through British cattle herds in the 1980s and 1990s, and it is assumed that many Britons were exposed to the disease before rigorous controls were imposed in 1996. The United Kingdom Medical Research Council’s (MRC’s) Prion Unit in London will work with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the country’s largest drug manufacturer, the MRC announced in April. The Prion Unit is in the Institute of Neurology at University College London. See also: The incubation period for vCJD lasts a decade or longer, and no one knows how many people in Britain may be silently infected. The MRC said the long latency period offers an opportunity to develop an effective treatment, but because the disease is so rare, normal commercial drug development is unrealistic. Professor John Collinge, director of the Prion Unit, said in the news release, “There is only so far we can take things on our own as academic scientists and, while there is no guarantee of success, now having the enormous resource and expertise of GSK with us is extremely exciting.” The partnership between the Prion Unit, University College London, and GSK “brings together for the first time all the relevant expertise and resources to make such a development feasible and may act as a stimulus to such academic-industry collaborations in other areas of medicine,” the MRC said. May 3, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – Academic researchers will join with a drug manufacturer in the United Kingdom to screen hundreds of thousands of compounds in a hunt for a treatment for variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), British officials announced recently. Officials estimate it will take at least 6 years to find a potential treatment and develop it for use in human trials. To find such a drug, researchers will screen hundreds of thousands of potential drug-like molecules from GSK’s collection, which contains more than a million such compounds and is one of the largest collections in the world, the MRC said. “Such libraries form one of the most important commercial assets of any pharmaceutical company and making such a library available to an academic group in this way is unprecedented,” the agency stated. The MRC said the Prion Unit has been working for years to understand the propagation of prions, the misfolded proteins that cause vCJD in humans and BSE and scrapie in animals. The unit “has shown in prion-infected laboratory animals that the disease process in the brain can be halted by targeting this protein, without apparent deleterious effects,” the MRC said. “The aim is now to develop a drug that is capable of readily entering the brain and binding to the normal prion protein” to keep it from misfolding and turning pathogenic.last_img read more

Seed treatment may make sprouts safer

first_img The experiment also showed that to consistently remove the pathogens, it took between 8 and 19 hours of soaking in the sanitizer and that the minimum ratio of mung beans to sanitizer (weight to volume) was 1:4. He said one possible drawback of the sanitizer is that seeds have to be soaked in it longer than what some sprouts producers are used to. “Some people just soak them for 2 or 3 hours. So some people would have to soak the seed a bit longer than they do,” he said. “It appears to be useful within all its limitations,” he said. He said the researchers “really loaded up the seeds” with pathogens, making decontamination a tough challenge. Although SOC is commercially available, it has not been approved for use on seeds in the United States or Canada, according to Warriner. Outbreaks of Salmonella infection linked with sprouts—normally eaten raw—are reported periodically. One outbreak in Ontario last year involved 600 people who had eaten mung bean sprouts. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that seeds used for sprouts be soaked in a 2% calcium hypochlorite (bleach) solution, but that measure is not completely effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In trying the treatment on other kinds of seeds, the researchers found that it worked well on alfalfa, soybean, flax, and cress seeds, but results with clover, mustard, and radish seeds were mixed. With several other kinds of seeds—chick pea, sunflower, buckwheat, sesame, and onion—the treatment failed to prevent contamination. Batches of contaminated seeds then were soaked for varying intervals in varying concentrations of the sanitizer, and a control batch of mung beans was soaked in the calcium hypochlorite solution for 20 minutes. Afterward the seeds were rinsed with water and allowed to germinate for 4 days. The sprouts then were tested for Salmonella and E coli O157:H7. Jul 13, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – A chemical sanitizer now used in contact lens solutions and toothpaste may help solve the problem of keeping pathogens like Salmonella and Escherichia coli out of edible sprouts, according to a study published in the July issue of the Journal of Food Protection. See also: A team led by Keith Warriner, assistant professor of food microbiology at the University of Guelph in Ontario, decided to find out if an existing sanitizer containing chlorite could be used to safely decontaminate seeds used for sprouts. The chemical is a “stabilized oxychloro (SOC)–based sanitizer” that is sold commercially as Germin-8-or, according to their report. Warriner’s group tested the sanitizer on mung bean, alfalfa, and a number of other kinds of seeds, comparing it with the FDA-recommended calcium hypochlorite treatment. Seeds were soaked in a solution containing five different strains of either Salmonella or E coli O157:H7 for 20 minutes and allowed to dry at room temperature. Why the substance worked on some seeds but not on others is unclear, the report says. But seeds on which the treatment worked germinated faster than the others, suggesting that “protective sites” within the slower-germinating seeds might have protected microbes from the sanitizer, the authors write. They also speculate that natural antimicrobials released by seeds may play a role. While the treatment eliminated the pathogens, tests showed that treated and untreated batches of seed contained about the same overall levels of bacteria, as indicated by aerobic plate counts. The authors say this suggests that the sanitizer did not affect bacteria naturally associated with the seeds (endogenous microflora). Francis Busta, PhD, director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense and professor emeritus of food microbiology and emeritus head of the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, University of Minnesota, said the sanitizer looks promising as a treatment at least for some kinds of seeds used for sprouts. When several types of seeds heavily contaminated with Salmonella and E coli O157:H7 were soaked in the sanitizer for several hours, sprouts subsequently produced from them were free of the pathogens, according to the report by a team of Canadian and British scientists. The treatment was not toxic to the seeds. The researchers also tested the sprouts for residual sanitizer and found that none of the samples contained more than 1 ppm, according to the article. Warriner said ingesting significant amounts of the substance would be harmful, but trace amounts are not. The investigators found that a solution of 100 parts per million (ppm) was enough to eliminate E coli from mung bean sprouts, while a 200-ppm solution eliminated Salmonella from the sprouts. In contrast, sprouts from seeds treated with the calcium hypochlorite solution remained heavily contaminated with both pathogens. SOC solutions up to 200 ppm did not significantly reduce seed germination or the yield of sprouts, according to the report. “I think it would have to be individually assessed on the kinds of seeds and sprouts,” Busta said. “If I was doing alfalfa sprouts I would strongly consider seeing if I could get this into my protocol. It would also depend on what it costs. A lot of these places [that produce sprouts] are pretty marginal; they don’t have a lot of cash flow.” Kumar M, Hora R., Kostrzynska W, et al. Inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella on mung beans, alfalfa, and other seed types destined for sprout production by using an oxychloro-based sanitizer. J Food Protect 2006 Jul; 69(7):1571-78 “We saw this oxychloro compound that was very detrimental to bacteria and kind to plant cells and our cells,” Warriner told CIDRAP News. He said it has been used as a chemotherapy drug as well as in contact lens solutions and toothpastes, “so we knew its properties before we started.” Dec 1, 2005, CIDRAP News story about sprouts-linked outbreak in Ontario read more

Outbreak strain of Salmonella found in dog food

first_img See also: The finding prompted a recall of two products by Mars Petcare US, Inc., of Franklin, Tenn., the FDA said in an Aug 25 announcement. The company recalled 5-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food sold in Pennsylvania. The FDA said people can be infected with Salmonella by handling contaminated pet food, especially if they don’t wash their hands afterward. The agency said 64 human cases related to S Schwarzengrund have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but none have been directly linked to the recalled products. The FDA and CDC are working with state and local officials to investigate the cases. The recalled Krasdale Gravy bags have a UPC code of 7513062596 and “best by” dates of Jul 16 and 17, 2008; the Red Flannel bags have a UPC code of 42869000062 and a “best by” date of Jul 12, 2008. But the latter products were sold in only two stores in Pennsylvania, and only one bag was unaccounted for, the company said in an Aug 21 news release posted on the FDA Web site. The Pennsylvania news release listed several precautions for handling pet food. Among other things, it said pet owners should wash their hands before and after handling pet food, feed pets somewhere other than the kitchen, wash pet food dishes after each use (preferably not in the kitchen sink), and dispose of old or spoiled pet food safely. Pets infected with Salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, but some will have only reduced appetite, fever, and abdominal pain, the agency said. Animals also can carry the pathogen without showing signs of illness. Consumers with questions about the recalled products can call Mars Petcare at 866-298-8332, the FDA said. Salmonella often causes fever, diarrhea (potentially bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in humans and can be serious or fatal in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immunity. In rare cases the pathogen can enter the bloodstream and cause severe disorders, such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and arthritis, the FDA said.center_img Schwarzengrund was the 29th most common Salmonella serotype among human cases reported to the CDC in 2005, according to information on the CDC Web site. It accounted for 138 cases, or 0.4% of the 36,184 cases that were serotyped. Aug 25 FDA news release In an Aug 10 news release, the Pennsylvania Department of Health said it had found 21 S Schwarzengrund cases since January, many of them in infants or small children. “Most of the cases have occurred in households with pets or where people are in close contact with pets, but there is no evidence that any human consumed pet food,” the statement said. Ten dog food samples representing seven Mars Petcare products were tested by the FDA. The agency said it tested 10 subsamples from each sample, for a total of 150 tests, and found two that were contaminated—one Krasdale Gravy dry food and one Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula. The source of contamination was unknown, according to an FDA question-and-answer bulletin. Aug 28, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – Salmonella Schwarzengrund, a relatively rare serotype that has been reported in 64 recent human illness cases, was found recently in two samples of dog food made by a Tennessee company, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
