first_imgMadam Kruah stands by the new rice mill. The Gbehlay-Geh Rural Women Multipurpose Farmers’ Cooperative in Karnplay, Nimba County, has appealed to the Government of Liberia and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for financial assistance to buy more paddy rice from smallholder farmers and that can be processed for the local market. The chairlady of the cooperative, Annie Kryah, told the Daily Observer recently that when government provides the financial assistance, it will boost rice production in the county and also improve farmers’ income.According to her, a large size rice mill a partner recently donated to them demands more paddy rice for processing, but the lack of finance limits farmers from purchasing more quantity of the commodity to supply the mill.Sample of the rice produced by the womenMadam Kruah said that her organization is striving to encourage more farmers to engage in rice production, but  additional cash to empower them to purchase farming implements is something that really requires money. She said the new rice mill will enhance farmers’ ability to produce more rice for the local markets, if only they have the resources to purchase the paddy rice from farmers as compared to what they are doing now with a reasonable price. The women are also involved in cassava production and processing.Meanwhile, Madam Krah has also called on local authorities to provide land to expand their farming activity.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
