Danish freedom fighters of all ages risked everything in daring, hurried rescue attempts of entire Jewish population. In the Number the Stars production, a young Annamarie and Kirsti Johansen flee from soldiers, interrogation, force dogs, personal danger, and loss of loved ones and their own fears as they try to help their friend Ellen Rosen escape across the ocean to Sweden and safety. In the “Terezin Promise” the play deals with the Terezin concentration camp and the Nazis who are in retreat, desperate to destroy evidence of their crime. While some prisoners escape hidden in the confusion of the retreat, Raja Englanderova remains to keep a promise she made to their teacher, Irena: she will not leave without the drawings and poems of the Terezin children. She convinces her friends and Hauns, the leader of the boys’ group, that they must find the buried bundles and hidden suitcase before the Nazis destroy the camp and them with it.“I went to the Holocaust Museum and saw some of the artwork and poetry from these children in the concentration camp,” said director Dorathea Kelly, drama director, debate and forensic coach. “It is exciting that the Wellington kids are bringing this adaption to the stage.
