Gov’t Pledges US$2.5m for George M. Weah Training Center

first_imgVice President Joseph N. Boakai and Rep. Edwin M. Snowe, Jr., have pledged government’s support of US$2.5m to the George M. Weah Training Center which construction begins sometime this month, March 2014.Amb. Baokai on Saturday during the ground breaking and historic training center in Careysburg said the erection of the training center would quench his jealousy of religiously watching talented youthful footballers of other countries and will able to see Liberian youths developing their talents.“We like this opportunity and we will support it our young people to be trained and to enjoy football,”  Vice President Boakai said.He stated that the naming of the training center after the 1995 World Player, Liberia’s and Africa’s football icon and legend who later became a politician is important because Liberia is moving and rising above political barriers to recognize the good in people.Amb. Boakai also said the name is important because it births nation building and buttresses the peace and reconciliation that Liberians are striving for.He hailed FIFA, through the FIFA West Africa Development Officer, for the level of support from the world football governing body and also the township leadership of Careysburg for the availability of the 190-acre of land.The Chairman on Rules, Order and Administration at the House of Representatives, Rep. Edwin Snowe committed the Legislature’s support and thanked the President of the Liberia Football Association for the dream of training Liberian footballers.FIFA’s West Africa Development Officer, John Sampon Kablan extended FIFA’s heartfelt greetings to Liberia and their desire to develop the game and hoped that the center would give young Liberians a home.FIFA has provided US$500,000 to cover the first phase of the project and has promised to provide the artificial turf for the two pitches in the training center. The training center is the country’s fourth goal project.In separate remarks, Montserrado County’s District # 1 Representative Josephine Francis, Information Minister Lewis G. Brown, who is also Chairman of the LFA Advisory Committee and Deputy Minister for Administration Jacque Capehart thanked the football house for the initiative and pledged their respective support.The Secretary General of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Nathaniel McGill, on behalf of honoree George M. Weah expressed his thanks and appreciation to the LFA and the national government.The Chairman of the Youth League of the ruling Unity Party (UP) Amos Tweh also thanked LFA for the naming of the training center after George Weah and urged the LFA to include skill training.The president of LFA, Musa Bility has expressed his hope for the training center to be completed by December-2014 and the artificial turf to be laid in two months. Musons Group Incorporated is the contractor and the consultant is Design and Building Incorporated, he said.Bility revealed that the construction of a multi-purpose two storey football house ( LFA’s Headquarters) will commence soon in the Sinkor’s belt and  the erection of a commercial center for the LFA is in place and might be constructed in Careysburg.Meanwhile, a 5-year National Football Development Plan, worth about US$5m was given to Vice President Joseph Boakai.
