WGN

first_imgThe Chicago Cubs are ending a nearly 90-year commitment to WGN Radio at the end of this baseball season.  WGN, 720AM, started broadcasting Cubs games on April 14, 1925.  When asked why they were leaving WGN, the Cubs replied “WGN said they were losing money because of declining listeners attributed to the Cubs losing seasons.”  The real reason is always money even though WGN and the Cubs had a 10 million dollar contract.  The contract will expire at the end of this season and negotiations have gone nowhere. The Cubs games will move to 780AM which is WBBM.  Nothing has been settled yet on whether WGN-TV will still air the Cubs games.  This contract started in 1948.  It will really seem different to loyal Cub fans who have considered the Cubs and WGN one entity.  Since AM stations no longer have the powerful signal they once had, it really won’t make much difference in this area what station they will be on.  Loyal Cub fans around here haven’t been able to listen to radio broadcasts for several years.I started listening to the Cubs in the 50’s because they broadcast the day games and this allowed me (as a younger kid) to hear baseball during the day.  I still like the Cubs but follow them more on the computer now than anywhere else.last_img read more
