New Marine Task Force to Use New Platform in Central America

first_imgLt. Col. Soria said the task force, which will send small detachments of Marines to locations throughout Central America, highlights the primary purpose of the JHSV: intra-theater lift. According to current planning, the task force will be active between June and November before redeploying to the United States until the following spring. Its work will augment that of small Marine detachments already in the region, including a civil affairs team in Belize, and security cooperation teams in Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, and Guatemala. It’s good that there is still staff in our country who feel the pain of other people Paxton said the demand for SPMAGTF-South was tied to the successful creation of Marine crisis response task forces for Africa and the Middle East in recent years, joking that “no good deed goes unpunished.” Because of finite resources, he said, the task force would be different and smaller than the other response units, but fine-tuned to the needs of the region. At a Washington, D.C. event in late February, Assistant Commandant Gen. John “Jay” Paxton said the new land-based unit may also make use of new Navy platforms designed to fill gaps in amphibious shipping. Lt. Col. Ignacio Soria, chief plans officer, G-5 for Marine Forces South, confirmed that task force Marines were set to be transported on the JHSV Spearhead, the first in its class. Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-South (SPMAGTF South), a unit comprising about 250 Marines to be headquartered at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, will answer a range of needs ranging from partner nation training to humanitarian assistance and counter-drug missions. It’s set to become active in June. “We are committed to tailoring some type of task force, and they are training right now, that would be able to do those missions that Gen. Kelly needs, primarily building partnership capacity … and some counter-narcotics, counter drug mission capability,” Paxton said. “We’re committed to provide that to him.” A new Marine task force set to become active in Central America in time for hurricane season will use a new seabasing platform — the joint high-speed vessel (JHSV) — to transport troops around the region. It’s not the first time Marines will make use of the JHSV in theater. The Spearhead provided transportation to Marines from Camp Lejeune’s 8th Engineer Support Battalion from May to October of last year in support of Southern Partnership Station 2014, according to a March report from the Marine Corps Center for Lessons Learned. The vessel, which divides its time between SOUTHCOM, Europe, and Africa, has also been used by other Marine detachments in the region. “We are committed to tailoring some type of task force, and they are training right now, that would be able to do those missions that Gen. Holtby keen for repeat celebration

first_img The Germany midfielder lashed in his first Barclays Premier League goal for Tottenham in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at Fulham. Spurs claimed their first league win in five games at Craven Cottage to ease the pressure on manager Andre Villas-Boas. Lewis Holtby hopes to recreate his cringeworthy goal celebration double act with Kyle Walker at Sunderland. Press Association Close friends Holtby and Walker stuck to a light-hearted celebration pledge in the wake of the winning goal at Fulham. The duo ended up bundled onto the ground, with Holtby admitting he would be “ashamed” to watch it back on television. But not even that embarrassment would be enough to stop him and Walker reprising their unusual goal toast should either find the net on Wearside. Holtby said: “He is a very good friend and we said to each other that whenever we score and we are both on the pitch we will do a celebration. “So we got together, did our little handshake and did a rolling around the floor type of thing. “It looked weird but we had a great laugh. “It was a fantastic thing to do with him.” Holtby added: “Hopefully (we will do it) at Sunderland again. “He is such a funny guy. If I see it on television, I will be ashamed of myself but I am always up for good fun.” Holtby may like to play the joker, but he is deadly serious about Tottenham’s need for league points ahead of Christmas. Manager Villas-Boas has been forced to defend his Spurs record this term after bringing in a host of new faces to offset the summer loss of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. The new recruits are yet to hit their personal and collective stride at White Hart Lane, and Holtby believes Spurs must seize on that Fulham victory to make December their season turning point. He said: “The fixtures we have are very important now and there is a possibility of getting a lot of points. “There are games every three days in December so we have to be up for it every time.” Jan Vertonghen suffered an ankle injury at Fulham and Villas-Boas has admitted the defender is a doubt for Saturday. Mousa Dembele’s ongoing hip complaint ruled him out of the Fulham clash at the last minute, but after resting he could come back into contention at the Stadium of Light. Full-back Danny Rose has made a tentative return to training, but is not yet ready for a playing comeback. last_img read more

Official Kotoko supporters group ask club’s board to resign

first_imgKotoko’s National Circles Council has called the club’s Board of Directors to resign following the team’s consistently poor run this season.Kotoko’s form in the second half has been worrying, after losing three out of four games.Players and officials have been held hostage by fans after two straight games following what they describe as disgraceful performances. The NCC are of the view that the problem is with the board of directors.“What is the policy direction of the club and who has to serve the core policy of the club and again supervises the management? It is the Board who supervises everybody in the team so if something is going wrong then who do we blame?” said Yaw Mensah, a member of the National Circles Council Executives.“First, they told us the problem was with the players. We worked with them and sacked those players. Again, they said it was the coach, which we supported and helped them sack Didi Dramani based on what they told us. But the problem is still there! “They told us [David] Duncan is the best man to do the job and still the problem is still there. So it means they have not been able to identify the main problem. For us we think they don’t know what they are doing so we want them to step aside.”Kotoko, who won the First Capital Plus Premier League last season to cap a three-year streak, are currently occupying the ninth position with 25 points.–last_img read more
