first_imgDESPITE the inclement weather, connections of the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club (RCMTC) will go ahead with the planned one-day horse race meet set for Monday, at the club’s facility Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice.Six races are carded for the day with the feature event being the Three-Year-Old animals over 1300 metres for a winning purse of $240 000 and trophy.The animals classified J and Lower are set to race over a distance of 1000m for a first prize of $200 000 and trophy.The winner of the 900m race for Two-Year-Old horses will take home $150 000 and trophy.There is the L1 and Lower 1000m contest for pole position takings of $100 000 and trophy.The L2 and Lower race is another 1000m affair for a winner’s take of $80 000.A L3 Unclassified event for animals over 1200m carries a first prize of $60 000 and trophy.A number of sponsors are on board including Banks DIH Limited, Colin Elcock and Attorney-at-Law Rajendra Poonai SC.Entries will close today and interested person can still contact Marcel Crawford Jr on 678-5342 or 696-9009.last_img read more

180 Schools Jostle for Honours at Lagelu Relay Race

first_imgKemi Olaitan in Ibadan One hundred and eighty private and public secondary schools from Oyo and neighbouring states, are set to participate in the third Lagelu FM Inter-Secondary School Relay Race competition for students under 15 years.According to the organisers, the event slated for between October 17 and 19,  at the University of Ibadan Sports Complex, is essentially a grassroots race with the objective of discovering and nurturing athletes for major national and international events. Events to be featured in the competition include 100m, 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m mixed race and 4×100 (hurdles).The General Manager (Operations), West Midland Communications, operators of  two radio station based in Ibadan, Lagelu FM and Splash FM,  Mr. Tunde Olawuwo, while speaking at a press conference to herald the competition, said it was a developmental avenue for young talents to be discovered.While lauding the Oyo State government for sponsoring the competition, he said some of the goodies available for grab as a means of encouraging the young athletes include scholarship, school equipment, teaching and academic materials aside from medals and trophies.Other sponsors include Sumal Foods, Fan Milk, Living Proof Bakery & Supermarket and Kayrom Lee Fitness Center.Recounting how the competition has helped participating schools in the area of talents discovery, the South West Zonal Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Femi Ajao, said the ministry  keyed into the competition since inception because of the firm belief in its capacity to help discover more talents, stating that some of the talents discovered at the last two editions helped their states win medals at the just concluded National Youth Games held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
