QPR can trouble Man Utd

first_imgChelsea have the chance to close the gap at the top of the Premier League when they face Wigan on Saturday evening.Andre Villas-Boas knows the well-deserved three points from the win over Manchester City on Monday will mean nothing unless they follow it up at the DW Stadium.Chelsea are 2/5 to get the points with the Latics 17/2 and the draw 15/4.Wigan have lost 10 of their 12 Premier League meetings with Chelsea and in the last three games between the sides the Blues have scored no less than 15 times without reply.Villas-Boas is hoping for another win.One quirky stat ahead of the game: Chelsea have conceded 22% of their goals in the first 15 minutes of Premier League games, so the slow start which was so evident on Monday night is actually consistent with the rest of the season so far.Manchester United have won eight and drawn three of their last 11 games, while QPR have won only one of their seven Premier League home games so far this season but that doesn’t tell the full tale. Two of QPR’s best performances to date have been against Chelsea and Manchester City and Loftus Road will be bouncing.Rangers are 13/2 to pull off another shock with United 4/9 and the draw at 17/5.United have not been scoring many goals in recent weeks (Wolves don’t count). Indeed they have scored once in each of their last five away game in the Premier League.I think the R’s will nick a draw and 15/2 for 1-1 looks a fair price.Fulham have a good record against Bolton at Craven Cottage, having won eight and drawn two of their 10 home games in the Premier League. The Trotters have lost 17 of their last 20 games in the PL and Fulham really should take all three points despite the disappointing results of the last week.We bet 8/13 Fulham with Bolton 11/2and the draw at 14/5.Where will Zamora be in February?Clint Dempsey is 5s to net the opener and the price for Fulham to lead both half time and after 90 minutes is 5/4, which I think they will.Bobby Zamora looks as if he wants away from Craven Cottage – and Victor Chandler have a market on where the striker will be plying his trade come 1 February 2012 and bet: (loan signings DO count)QPR  11/8Fulham 9/4Any other 7/4Sunderland 8/1Aston Villa 8/1Everton 14/1West Ham 16/1The enhanced treble at victorchandler.com for all three of the local sides to win their Premier League games is 16/1; given two look good things can Rangers land the hat-trick?last_img read more

Warriors 112; Pacers 89: Inside the Warriors’ defensive effort

first_imgOAKLAND – They have shattered scoring records with All-Star talent that can make shots almost every time they try. But as the Warriors gear up for another NBA championship run, they are depending on something they feel has become more instrumental in hoisting three trophies in the past four years. The Warriors have focused on their defense, the area that coaches often harp about because of its value and players avoid because of the hustle that it requires. Overqualified Mammals

first_img(Visited 17 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Here are some mammals with capabilities that exceed the requirements of mere survival.Seal GPS:  Live Science reports that Weddell seals in the Antarctic may have GPS guided by earth’s magnetic field.  They have an amazing ability to find their breathing holes in the ice after staying down on complex hunting maneuvers.  This ability, if confirmed to be magnetically based, would have to be extremely precise for them to find spots under the featureless ice to high precision.“The animal always found its way back. It’s like he knew exactly where the hole was,” Fuiman said. “I couldn’t figure out how they would do that. How did they know where they were by the time they turned around?”Fast sniff:  “Neuroscientists have discovered that mice can detect minute differences in the temporal dynamics of the olfactory system,” Science Daily says.  Researchers publishing in PLoS Biology experimented on mice and found that their ability to discriminate between smells is “capable of very high transient information transmission rates” on the order of 13 milliseconds.Time management:  “Many animals may have a previously under-appreciated ability to make up for lost time with more effort,” another article on Science Daily says alongside a photo of African cats and zebras.  It’s more than just measuring the trade-off between speed and accuracy.  Princeton researchers identified “a crucial third component: an ability to expend effort at a greater rate to compensate for any limit to the time spent making a decision.”  A Darwinian tale was concocted to explain this ability:This flexibility gives an animal an advantage, in terms of Darwinian fitness, over individuals that are stuck with a simple trade-off between speed and accuracy, the researchers report. Because of this fitness advantage, the authors predict that the ability to control investment of time and effort separately should be widespread in nature. What this means is that, after the fact, we can see how the trait is beneficial.  It says nothing about how the trait arose.  What mutation in a mammal brain gave it time management skill?Got a job opening?  Hire these mammals!  They’re overqualified, but will work for food.last_img read more

Holden Wins Young Sportsperson of the Year Award

first_imgAfter taking up Touch Football only three years ago, Holden spent two years playing socially before joining La Trobe Touch in 2011. This year has seen the 18-year-old represent Victoria at the 2011 X-Blades National Youth Championships as well as being part of the Victorian Women’s Open team that competed at this month’s New South Wales State Cup in Port Macquarie. Holden said she was honoured to receive the award, which was presented to her by Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Honourable Hugh Delahunty. “Recently the President of La Trobe Touch, Charles Willacy, nominated me for Young Sportsperson of the Year. It was a Victorian Government Department of Sport and Recreation grant for $3000, and the runners up got $1000,” Holden said. “The other awards included Local Heroes, Sporting Team of the Year and Grassroots Awards.”2011 has been a big learning experience for Holden, who first represented Victoria at this year’s National Youth Championships. Holden says that while results didn’t go their way, it was a great opportunity. “We just wanted to learn as much as we could in the space of time that we had and we did. By the end of the tournament we had grown as players and a as team and we felt so much better than we did at the start of the tournament, so that’s what we got out of it.”From there Holden tried out for and was selected in the Victorian Women’s Open team to take part in the New South Wales State Cup, something that she says was very beneficial for her development as well as that of the team. “It was a really intense weekend, lots of games and lots of information to take in but it’s been really good, I feel like I have improved and it makes me so motivated for the National Touch League. Getting an idea of the pace and the speed of it and the talent up here, it makes me so motivated to go back to Victoria and step it up.”“I’m always in awe of some of the players in the other teams…just the speed and the skill level, it’s just amazing. It just makes me so motivated and inspired.”The Victorian team impressed at the State Cup, reaching the quarter finals of the Women’s Open division, giving the team plenty of belief for the future. “We’ve shown that we can actually bring it to these teams and we’re not here to make up the numbers, we are here to compete. It’s disappointing getting into the quarter final and not being able to progress but we are all really hungry to come back and go further.”The side was captained and coached by 2011 Alliance Women’s Open captain, Leah Percy, who is someone Holden looks up to and hopes to emulate in the future. “Leah is probably the most inspiring athlete that I’ve ever had the privilege of being around. She’s so encouraging and positive all the time and she’s been amazing, I’m so grateful to be under her this year,” Holden said.  “A lot of people say to me ‘you’re so lucky to be around Leah when you are so young’ because they’ve gone through coaches and are sort of 21 or 22 by the time they’ve been around a coach like that so I’m just grateful to have her around, she’s been great.”last_img read more

It’s international. Buckeye linebacker Joshua Perry was recently traveling back to the U.S. from Costa Rica. He, unfortunately, came across a Michigan fan at the airport. Genesio amazed by Lyons performance

first_imgOlympique Lyon successfully reached the third place in the Ligue 1 by beaten Nice 3-2 at home thanks to Memphis Depay’s hattrick and it could be the final game for Nabil Fekir as he is thought to join Liverpool. This match was a farewell for Lucien Favre, the coach of the guests but it was also maybe the last game for Nabil Fekir as he is close to joining Liverpool – and Genesio didn’t rule his departure out.The Lyon coach spoke about his side’s future as he said, according to Birmingham Mail:Opinion: Neymar will earn respect back from the PSG fans Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 After completing his incredible return to Parc des Princes, we predict that Neymar will earn the respect back from PSG supporters. The situation between Neymar…“We are still a young team. There will be changes in the off-season. I savour that after this qualification. We did not panic after the first goal. I take my hat off to Nabil Fekir for his return to the top level. Thanks to him.”“I was calm until the second Nice goal. We qualify and that’s the most important thing.”“The players gave everything. It’s good to see the players together at the end. I thank them. They showed incredible spirit. I have always been supported and we have the result tonight.”last_img read more

Eddie Howe relieved with Cup win

first_imgBournemouth boss Eddie Howe confirmed he was relieved to see his team progress to the next round after holding on to a narrow 2-1 win against Norwich. The Cherries sealed a spot in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup thanks to goals from Junior Stanislas and Steve Cook.Norwich twice hit the post at Vitality Stadium and substitute Jordan Rhodes missed a gilt-edged opportunity when he headed wide from six yards in the dying minutes.Howe told Bournemouthecho: “It was a tough night for us, I thought Norwich played very well. Full credit to them. We had watched them a lot and knew it was going to be a difficult game.“They are a really improving team and one which will, on that evidence, take some stopping in the Championship.“I thought they performed well and we were below par and that made it a really difficult game for us.“We rode our luck but we got through and will certainly take that.“It’s very difficult for me to say for sure (why the performance was below par). I need to speak to the players who played and gather their thoughts as well.Eddie Howe pleased with attacking poise, but feels Wilson was too honest Stuart Heath – August 25, 2019 A.F.C Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe felt as though his striker Callum Wilson was too honest against Manchester City and may have won a penalty,…“We looked disjointed. Maybe the changes, maybe a couple of players who came in hadn’t had enough games behind the scenes.“But we lacked a sharpness and a fluency which is usually there.“Overall, it was a disappointing performance but I suppose there must have been good elements for us to withstand the pressure and find a way to win.“Norwich had some presentable chances which they didn’t take. Artur (Boruc) made some good saves, which was important for us.“It won’t be a game I will want to dwell on too much. I think it’s important we focus on the next challenge, which is a big one in Manchester United.“We’re pleased to get through and it’s great to be in the next round but the performance is one we won’t want to remember for too long.“That we won is the only positive I can find, really. Artur Boruc performed well in goal and Marc Pugh was his usual consistent self and gave everything to the game but there weren’t too many other positives.“We’ve made this step, now we want to try to go one more and the motivation is huge. The semi-final is a different level.”last_img read more
